The Metropolis Fire Department learned Tuesday that it will be getting an Assistance to Firefighters Grant worth $35,269 that will be used to buy radios and turnout gear for the department. Illinois Congressman John Shimkus made the announcement Tuesday. “Metropolis is to be commended for their successful efforts in obtaining this competitive federal grant. Thanks to Southern Five for their assistance,” Shimkus said. Fire departments serving less than 20,000 residents are required to provide a five percent non-federal match for these one year grants. Departments serving between 20,000 and 50,000 residents must provide a 10 percent match, and larger departments must provide a 20 percent match. The grant program is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is part of the U.S. Homeland Security Department.
