Toyota to resume normal production at year’s end

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Toyota said on Friday it would maintain limited production until the end of the year. The automaker is working to resolve supply chain issues and a crisis triggered by a tsunami in Japan.

Production levels in domestic plants are currently at 50 percent, while operations outside Japan are at 40 percent. The company plans to begin restoring normal production in local facilities in July. Overseas operations will ramp up a month later due to the time it takes to deliver parts abroad.

Regular operations are set to resume November and December.

President Akio Toyoda apologized to consumers in a press conference and assured them of “unprecedented customer service.” He told dealers and suppliers, “I feel terribly sorry for the hardships we may have caused you.”

Toyota will continue obtaining parts from its usual suppliers but is considering substituting parts from other companies. There are about 150 parts affecting assembly lines for new cars. The parts are mostly electronics, rubber and paint-related.

The North America unit, which is operating at 30 percent, said there are no plans for layoffs in plants. Production in North America was not suspended after the March 11 quake in Japan. But the unit took steps to conserve parts. It also suspended overtime work and stopped operations for five days last week.

Parts for the dozen Lexus and Toyota models built in the United States are sourced from 500 suppliers in North America. The automaker last month resumed shipments of parts to the United States and began production in Japan of Prius and Lexus hybrids, for which U.S. demand is high.

Philippine Airlines to rely on partner carriers during strike

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

Manila, Philippines (AHN) – Philippine Airlines continued to face labor issues on Friday even as it assured passengers that it was ready for the worst — the first strike by the carrier’s biggest union in more than a decade.

“We apologize to our passengers for whatever anxiety and inconvenience threats of work stoppage have spawned,” president and chief operating officer Jaime Bautista said in a statement. “Rest assured we are doing everything we can to ensure that your flights will proceed as scheduled.”

PAL plans to rely on 134 partners, including 12 carriers in Southeast Asia, 11 in North America and two dozen in Europe, during the work stoppage, which would be the first since the union crippled operations in 1998.

The Philippine Airlines Employees’ Association voted last week to strike in response to the company’s refusal to include an outsourcing plan in negotiations for a new contract.

The carrier, Asia’s first airline, averted a strike by flight attendants last October with the intervention of the government. But then it announced it was seeking funds for peso 2.5 billion ($58 million) worth of severance packages to outsource three non-core units.

The union representing administrative employees says 2,600 workers would be laid off if the company’s airport services, call center and in-flight catering businesses are outsourced.

But President Noynoy Aquino last week upheld the decision of labor officials allowing the plan, which is part of PAL’s cost-cutting measures to recoup losses during the global recession and weak sales.

PALEA wanted airline officials to negotiate without preconditions but PAL demanded that any new collective bargaining agreement exclude the issue of outsourcing. The impasse dragged on for five months, even while another union representing cabin crew accused the airline of “outdated sexist policies” such as a 40-year retirement age and “discriminatory” maternity rules.

Labor officials on Friday maintained its ruling in favor of the Flight Attendants’ and Stewards’ Association of the Philippines, and for the second time rejected PAL’s arguments.

The same day, PALEA held a massive rally in the nation’s main business district along with other labor groups.

A government-mandated cooling off period has kept the union from holding a strike. Early March, it filed a notice of work stoppage, which was approved by 86 percent of participating members.

The vote was held on Mar. 25. PAL submitted its counter-proposal three days later, on Monday.

“It’s not true that management refuses to convene negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement ,” Bautista said on the day of the rally. “The union’s claim that there is no justifiable reasons for the spin-off of three units… likewise have no leg to stand on.”

The submission of the counter-proposal “is the best proof that PAL is willing to negotiate,” added Bautista.

Obese Children Show Signs of Heart Disease Typically Seen in Older Adults

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Montreal, Canada (AHN) – New research finds that the blood vessels of obese children show signs of stiffness normally seen in much older adults with cardiovascular disease.

“We were surprised to find that these obese children already have stiff blood vessels,” says Dr. Kevin Harris from B.C. Children’s Hospital. “Aortic stiffness is an early indicator of cardiovascular disease in obese children.” He says it is as if the aging process has been accelerated in their aorta.

The aorta is the largest artery in the human body. It carries and distributes oxygen-rich blood to all the other arteries and normally acts as a buffer to the pumping action of the heart.

Typically a marked increase in aorta stiffness is linked to aging and is a strong predictor of future cardiac events and mortality in adults.

“The normal aorta has elastic qualities that buffer the flow of blood. When that elasticity is lost, aortic stiffness results – a sign of developing cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Harris told the meeting. “Aortic stiffness is associated with cardiovascular events and early death.”

The results of the study were presented at the 2010 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, co-hosted by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

To see actual changes to the performance of the heart and blood vessels in obese children is extremely alarming, says Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson Dr. Beth Abramson.

“We know there is an association between unhealthy lifestyles and heart disease. Our kids are at risk,” she says. “Poor nutrition and inactivity are threatening their health and well-being. We must rethink the lifestyle standards we have accepted as a society to protect the future health of our kids.”

The rate of childhood obesity in North America has nearly tripled over the last 25 years and it continues to rise. The health risks to overweight and obese children include heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.
