Obama promises training skills to edge past global competition

Tejinder Singh – AHN News Correspondent

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – The United States would lead the world in college graduates by the end of this decade according to the pledges made by the top executive of the country on Wednesday at a manufacturing plant in Alexandria, Virginia.

Addressing an audience at Alexandria campus of the “Northern Virginia Community College,” during an event promoting the program, “Skills for America’s Future Manufacturing,” President Barack Obama touched upon ways aimed at enhancing skills through training workers and investing in research and technology to give the U.S. an edge in competing with other countries.

Citing a student named David, President Obama emphasized the importance of the facility said, “David said whatever he ends up doing, the automotive training program here was “the spark (he) needed to get (his) career started.”

“We’ve got to light more sparks all across America, and that’s going to make a difference in the futures of individuals who are looking for a better life, but it’s also going to make a difference in America’s future,” Obama continued.

Setting a goal “that by the end of this decade, we are going to once again lead the world in producing college graduates,” President Obama said, “To achieve that, we’re making college more affordable and we’re investing in community colleges.”

With unemployment figures still hovering at uncomfortable levels and economy sluggish in recovery, Obama balanced his words saying, “Obviously we’re slowly recovering from a very painful recession … But there are too many people out there still out of work.”

According to the White House officials, the latest program aims to train half a million community college students for manufacturing jobs over the next five years, which would help offset the gap left by the 2.7 million older workers who will be retiring in the next decade or so.

On a lighter vein, Obama explained his rolled-up shirt sleeves, saying, “My sleeves are rolled up. I was getting under the hood (to repair cars).”

Amid laughter, the president asked, “Do you guys want me to work on your car?” adding, “Don’t do it,” with more laughter breaking out among the audience.

Earlier before addressing the audience of more than 100 people, President Obama wearing button- down shirt with the cuffs rolled up, no jacket, light blue tie, gray pants, visited a classroom calling out, “Hello, hey everybody, what’s going on?” as he entered.

President made it a point to ask each students name and then had conversation with instructor Packer, who said it is the 5th semester of doing program.

From the classroom, the president moved to a garage where a half dozen people waited with cars with hoods propped open.

After the instructor had noted that the facility was a hybrid repair class, President Obama told the accompanying journalists, “This facility here at NOVA is one of the few that provides that kind of training.”

“This is going to be the future so you guys are on the cutting edge,” the president told students, adding as he was leaving, “You guys are doing great work, keep it up.”

Obama administration officials have confirmed that the National Association of Manufacturers is now backing the program, “Skills for America’s Future Manufacturing.”

Somalia to teach job skills to youths to avert extremism

Shafi’i Abokar – AHN News AHN Correspondent

Mogadishu, Somalia (AHN) – Somalia’s fragile transitional government has disclosed it has finalized a job creation program for youths in a bid to protect them from falling into crimes such as extremism.

Aweys Sheik Haddad, director general for Somali labor, youth and sports ministry, announced the program Thursday afternoon during a ceremony marking World Tuberculosis Day.

Haddad said the program will teach job skills for young men to prevent them from being recruited as fighters by the rebel Islamist group Al-Shabaab.

He said the program will be in two phases, first to teach the youths job skills and then to find job opportunities for them.

“I am very hopeful that this tangible initiative will yield positive results of decreasing the number of Somali youths exploited as combatants by the terrorist Al-Shabaab group,” Haddad told the ceremony.

He denied as “baseless propaganda” reports that the Somali government also recruits children as soldiers. However all participants in Somalia’s armed conflicts, including the transitional federal government, the regional semi-autonomous states, moderate Islamists and the al Qaeda-linked militants are known to recruit child soldiers.

Former warlords also used to recruit children, mostly those from poorer families and orphans.

YWCA Canada pushes for national child care program

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

Toronto, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Canada is pushing for a national child care program to ensure the country’s future economic prosperity.

The YWCA pointed out more women should be freed from child care duties as the Canadian workforce increasing relies on female workers who are educated and skilled.

The proposal is an alternative to men beginning to be more active in raising children, according to the YWCA report released Monday prior to the global celebration of International Women’s Day.

While many Canadian couples want to have both husband and wife working, the presence of young children forces women to either stay at home or seek only part-time employment. One alternative is to bring the children to child care facilities, which charge up to $60 a day and often have long waiting lists.

Despite the establishment of a national daycare program being one of the vital recommendations of the 1970 Royal Commission on the Status of Women, regulated child care in Canada is available for only 20 percent of children under 5 years old.

However, even with that limitation, employment of women with babies and toddlers grew to 64.4 percent in 2009 from 27.6 percent in 1976. For women with children with the ages 6 to 15, employment reached 79 percent.

Last year, Ontario introduced the full-day kindergarten with schools offering the service expected to reach 1,700 in 2012. YWCA Chief Executive Officer Paulette Senior welcomed the launch of the full-day kindergarten because it will permit the women to participate fully in the economic, social, cultural and political life of their communities.

Harvard ends Vietnam-era ban on ROTC

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

Cambridge, MA, United States (AHN) – Harvard University has decided to reinstate the Reserve Officers Training Corps four decades after it ended the program, and two months after the ban against gays from serving in the military was repealed.

The university is resuming the Naval ROTC this summer, when a law overturning “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” takes effect. It is also working on bringing back programs of other branches of the Armed Forces.

Under an agreement with the Navy, Harvard will cover the costs of students’ participation in the program. In addition, it will provide the Navy with office space and access to facilities.

“Together, we have made a decision to enrich the experience open to Harvard’s undergraduates, make the military better, and our nation stronger,” said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.

Harvard, one of six partner institutions of the Navy when the program was established in 1926, stopped the ROTC 40 years ago following massive student protests against the Vietnam War.

“Our renewed relationship affirms the vital role that the members of our Armed Forces play in serving the nation and securing our freedoms, while also affirming inclusion and opportunity as powerful American ideals,” Harvard University President Drew Faust said in a statement.

After the repeal of the ban on gays was enacted in December, Faust said he would meet with military officials to revive the ROTC. The repeal “affirms American ideals of equal opportunity and underscores the importance of the right to military service as a fundamental dimension of citizenship,” he had said.

The university will form a panel responsible for bringing back the ROTC and for making improvements to the program. The committee will be chaired by an Army major who served in Afghanistan, Kevin Kit Parker, who is also a professor in Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Fifty Pakistani students coming to study U.S.

Tejinder Singh – AHN News Correspondent

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Fifty Pakistani students are due to arrive in the United States in the first week of 2011 under an exchange program.

Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programs Alina Romanowski announced their arrival during a conference call on Thursday. She said a special effort was made to select students who have never before traveled to the U.S.

The students are part of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Pakistan (Global UGRAD-Pakistan). Global UGRAD-Pakistan students engage in one semester of non-degree study and are placed at more than 35 accredited two- and four-year higher education institutions in more than 25 states.

Romanowski noted that at least one course on American History, also termed an “American Studies Course,” must be pursued by the visiting students.

The students were not screened for any “terrorist mentality,” nor for “religious backgrounds,” Romanowski told journalists. All, however, had to go through the regular visa application screening process.

She said all of the students would return home at the end of the course.

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in coordination with partner organization IREX, will host an orientation in Washington for the students Jan. 3-6, according to a State Department communique.

Launched in fall 2010, Global UGRAD-Pakistan is design to provide a “substantive exchange experience” at a U.S. college or university to emerging student leaders from underrepresented sectors in Pakistan, according to the communique. The goal of the program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Pakistan.

Due to the security situation in Pakistan, the exchange program is limited to a “welcome program” for the Pakistani students as no American students are going to terror-infested Pakistan.

Obama Is Going to Establish Scholarships For Single Mothers

Having to take care of their families on their own, single, working mothers have perhaps the toughest job of all. A goal or a wish for many moms that has to be put on hold because of family responsibilities, is higher education. President Obama, together with his new administration, is, however, encouraging moms to make their education a priority. Obama scholarships will offer working mothers a great chance to improve their futures. While encouraging people of all ages to seek higher education, Obama is particularly targeting working moms with his Scholarships for Moms program. The Scholarships for Moms program will build on the federal government’s long-standing offer of Pell grants. Applied for through FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), Pell grants are the most commonly applied for forms of aid for students going to college. To encourage more mothers to return to school, the Obama administration is now making some changes. For the Scholarships for Moms program, the biggest incentive is in the amount of money that is being offered. The maximum amount awarded through Pell grants is about $4,000 per student, but for mothers who apply to the program, that amount is increased to $5,000. The aim of these grants is to allow working moms to return to school and earn a degree that allows them to better provide for their families now and in the future. The administration also envisages that by equipping mothers with skills to earn more money as working professionals will also be a stimulus to the economy. Moms can receive an education without worrying about the costs of school or having to pay back money for a loan.

Another great incentive for moms considering this program is that it applies to enrollment in nearly any type of higher education institution. Four-year university courses are covered as well as smaller community college courses. You can choose either a public school or a private one. One option for busy moms who can’t stay on campus is to study through online courses. The government’s Scholarships for Moms program really is a comprehensive attempt which attempts to get eager mothers back into the classroom. The Obama scholarship basically takes a lot of the worry out of returning to school. Working moms can earn a degree in almost any area of interest. This means that they can be fully equipped to provide for their families. Higher education no longer needs to be an unobtainable goal or an unfulfilled wish. The Scholarships for Moms program is designed to help create a brighter future for mothers and their children.
