Federal probe set into fatal shooting of Pace University student

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

Mount Pleasant, NY, United States (AHN) – The Justice Department is set to begin its probe of the death of a Pace University student shot by police last year. A grand jury cleared the officer in the shooting, a decision the victim’s family had expected.

“We never believed the indictment would come at the state level. We always thought it would have to come at the federal level,” Danroy Henry, Sr., the father of Danroy “D.J.” Henry Jr., said on CNN’s “American Morning” on Tuesday.

The younger Henry died Oct. 17 after being shot by a Mount Pleasant police officer responding to a bar brawl. The business management junior allegedly two struck officers with his car, but the victim’s family says he was murdered.

Westchester County District Attorney Janet Difiore announced Monday that a grand jury had found “no reasonable cause” to indict Aaron Hess, the officer who shot Henry.

The grand jury began its hearing on the incident last month and heard testimony from 46 civilians, including some Pace University students. Hess was among members of law enforcement who testified, and he did so without protection of immunity from prosecution.

According to police, an officer had knocked on the window of a car parked in a fire lane outside the bar in Thornwood. The car, driven by Henry, sped off and struck the officer, who ended up on the hood of the vehicle.

A second officer tried to pull the first officer from the hood but was also mowed down by the car. The first officer then shot at the vehicle and another officer fired into the car before it crashed into a police cruiser.

Two officers were treated for minor injuries after the shooting. Of the two passengers in the car with Henry, who were also Pace University players, only one was hurt with a minor gun shot wound.

Henry’s family and students who witnessed the incident have raised doubts about the police’s reconstruction of events that led to his death. They say Henry, who played wide receiver and defensive back for the university football team, was simply moving his car from the fire lane.

“He was asked to move his car from one police department and a different officer from another police department killed him,” the victim’s father told CNN.

As early as a week after the shooting, Henry’s family had requested the Justice Department to take charge of the probe, citing the leak of a blood alcohol test as proof the investigation was compromised. The family has also criticized Mount Pleasant police for failing to protect gunpowder evidence on the car.

Student caught using marker arrested by teacher

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Editor

Oklahoma City, OK, United States (AHN) – An Oklahoma teacher last Friday arrested a student for being in possession of a permanent marker.

Apparently the 13-year-old Roosevelt Middle School student violated a little known city ordinance which prohibits the possession of a permanent marker in certain circumstances.

The boy was caught using a permanent marker at Roosevelt Middle School by a teacher, according to the crime report filed with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Delynn Woodside, 50, a math teacher at the school noticed the marker bled through a piece of paper and made a citizen’s arrest. Police were then notified and transferred the student to a juvenile detention center.

Reportedly before the boy was detained he tried to hide the marker from the teacher when she asked for it.

A school district spokeswoman said officials will review the incident upon students return from winter break, which began Friday.

Allegedly the boy violated City Ordinance 35-202, which states it is illegal for any person to possess spray paint or a permanent marker on private property without the permission of the property owner.

“No person may possess an aerosol spray paint container or broad-tipped indelible marker on any private property unless the owner, agent, manager, or other person having control of the property consented to the presence of the aerosol spray paint container or broad-tipped indelible marker,” the ordinance reads.

The law was originally targeted at curbing graffiti and is listed under the nuisance chapter of city ordinance.

Fake Harvard student gets 10 years probation

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

Cambridge, MA, United States (AHN) – The Delaware man who gained international attention for cheating his way into one of the world’s best schools and nearly graduating has been sentenced to 10 years of probation.

Former Harvard University student Adam Wheeler admitted on Thursday to larceny, identity fraud, falsifying an endorsement, and pretending to hold a degree. As his sentence for the 20 offenses, he will have to continue with counseling and spend a decade of his life reporting to a probation officer.

Wheeler is also required to pay restitution of more than $45,800 for grants he received while a student. He is banned from having direct or indirect contact with the university and other schools he used to gain admission into Harvard.

He was given two and a half years in prison for identity theft but he was ordered to serve only 30 days of the sentence, a balance that the judge suspended for 10 years.

Wheeler, 24, was a senior at Harvard when he applied for Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships last September. His applications caught the attention of a professor, who found that Wheeler had plagiarized nearly an entire piece written by a colleague.

The university soon discovered that Wheeler had submitted a false Harvard transcript showing perfect grades over three years in his Rhodes and Fulbright applications. A more extensive review of his academic file revealed that he had similarly submitted false transcripts from MIT and Philips Academy in Andover when he applied for transfer to Harvard.

Wheeler had also submitted in his Harvard application several letters of recommendation from MIT and Philips Andover, and documents showing he had received a perfect SAT score of 1600.

The recommendations contained forged signatures of professors at Bowdoin College in Maine, where Wheeler had been suspended because of plagiarism.

During his time at Harvard, Wheeler won two prestigious writing prizes with submissions that were also plagiarized.

According to university records, Wheeler was awarded the Winthrop Sargent prize for a work entitled, “Mapping An Ideological Demesne: Utopia and The Tempest.” and the Hoopes prize for, “The Mapping of an Ideological Demesne: Space, Place, and Text From More to Marvell.”

The two awards and a research grant gave Wheeler a total of $14,000. He also received financial aid from the university amounting to more than $31,000.

Wheeler was expelled from Harvard in October but he continued to lie about his academic record.

He applied for an internship at McLean Hospital, the largest psychiatric facility at Harvard, and despite being rejected, attempted to transfer to Brown University, Stanford University and Yale University by claiming he was an intern at McLean.
