Mulberry ditches planned 2nd U.K. factory due to high tax rates

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

Somerset, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Luxury goods retailer Mulberry postponed plans Thursday to open a second factory in Britain because of the high tax rates in the country. Mulberry Chief Executive Godrey Davis pinpointed the impact of rising National Insurance rates on operating costs.

However, Davis admitted the company would inevitably have to open a second factory in 2012 to meet the high demand for its high-end handbags. Because of the popularity of Mulberry’s bags, such as the Tillie and Alexa models, its one factory in Somerset can hardly cope with the high demand and is hiking production capacity by 80 percent.

The Alexa bags, priced at a minimum of $1,200 (GBP 800) per piece, helped propel Mulberry’s pre-tax profits for the first half of 2010 to $7.05 million (GBP 4.7 million). As a result, the company’s share prices rose to almost 900 pence from 100 pence in November 2009.

Davis said the political and economic climate in the U.K. has not been conducive to businesses in the past decade, particularly new investments. He proposed NI holidays for manufacturers. Employer NI contributions will go up in April to 13.8 percent from 12.8 percent for workers earning over $204 (GBP 136) a week.

Samantha Cameron, wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron and ambassador of the British Fashion Council, acknowledged last week that the fashion sector helps boost economic growth in the country.

Scholarships And Loans For Student

Student loans in the United Kingdom is given to pay the tuition fees and the other essential educational everyday expenditure like hall fare, books, notes, etc. This is only appropriate for the private institutions. Government fund for education is not a fraction of Student financial aid. It means to award scholarship for each and every student. Some countries like Germany, gives a little amount of financial help for every student. A synonym of financial aid is scholarship. There are many types of scholarships and loans in the schools and colleges.

All the government of the states of U.S offers merit based scholarships, grants; work with job and educational loans. There is also some research based scholarship for the student. In this year, Norwegian government offers more than eight hundred scholarships for the students. Research based scholarship means, a student can get financial or facility help by working in the research works of the country. In this year, more than 8000 undergraduate or post graduate stunts are going to get scholarship according to their merit. There is some division of scholarship. The government has done a tremendous job here. Pell scholarship, SEOG scholarship, SMART scholarship, Academic performance scholarship, FWS scholarship, and FSL scholarship is almost same in the developed countries. All of these scholarships except FSL scholarship are for undergraduate students. FSL scholarship is for post graduate students. There are also some scholarships like Bill-Melinda scholarship, IBM scholarship, Munich scholarship for the school or college students. They are- Pell scholarship, SEOG scholarship, SMART scholarship, Academic performance scholarship, FWS scholarship, and FSL scholarship. Some educational loans also offered to the students. They are, Federal plus loan, FS loan, Federal parkas loan etc. In 10/7/2010, congress has eliminated PL loan, which act can hamper a life of a student. Without scholarship, this is kind of impossible to study in the developed countries like United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Norway, New Zeeland, Australia and Canada. Students from third world countries only come to these countries for study with scholarship. Without scholarship, this is impossible to bear the cost of study.

In many European countries, the student loan is very essential for the students, because the cost of education is very expensive there. The privet universities sometimes funded with endowment. The government institutions are normally funded fully or partially by the local state authority. Sometimes, the university governing body contributes a large amount of money for the students. In United Kingdom and in the United States, most of the Universities or other educational institutions are private. So the full free tuition fee culture is very low in those private universities. For this reason, the education is very expensive there. United Kingdom is a well educated country. The percentage of education is almost hundred percent there. As the education is very expensive there, student loans are very important.

UK deports five Nepali students over visa violations

Anil Giri – AHN News Correspondent

Kathmandu, Nepal (AHN) – Five Nepali students were recently deported from the United Kingdom for abusing student visas to travel to the UK in order to work, the British Embassy in Kathmandu announced Thursday.

The embassy said in a statement that all five students were returned to Nepal on Monday after being caught working illegally at a car wash in the British town of Bury St. Edmunds by UK Border Agency officers. “Immigration checks revealed that all the men had student visas, four of them were not studying while one was studying but working much more than the permitted hours,” the embassy said.

The statement said that the colleges that had sponsored the students are now being investigated for potential abuse of the immigration system.

Under Tier 4 of the Points Based System, colleges are required to report absenteeism by international students to the UK Border Agency. Against the backdrop of the arrest, UK Immigration Minister Damian Green made a strong statement to clamp down on abuse of student visas in the UK.

“I believe attracting talented students from abroad is vital to the UK, but we must clamp down on abuse and be more selective about who can come here and how long they can stay. Too many students arriving to study at below degree level have been coming here with a view of living and working, rather than studying,” Green said in the embassy statement.

European banks expect staff exodus to U.S. over pay rules

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Europeans banks are bracing for a mass exodus of their staff to the U.S. over pay rules. Employees of some of Europe’s largest banks have hinted that they would soon file applications with U.S. financial institutions after receiving their 2010 bonuses, headhunters said Sunday.

The majority of European bank staff got smaller bonuses paid mostly in deferred shares because of stringent European Union rules on bank bonuses, while employees of leading U.S. banks got their bonuses last week, with a large part in cash.

To worsen the situation, European regulators are considering stricter rules on bonuses because of public uproar over insensitivity of banks in granting millions of bonuses to staff, while the rest of the world from whom banks earn their income tighten their belts due to austerity measures put in place by national governments.

However, there are reports that the talks between the British government and the banks over fat bonuses and executive pay, and increasing lending to small companies have run into problems and would likely be postponed.

Last week Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and JPMorgan paid bonuses to their staff. In some cases, bonuses below $500,000 were paid in cash, while larger bonuses had only 20 percent in deferred shares.

Despite the threat of exodus, British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg pushed for a breakup of banks to keep them safe and protect the government from having to bail out very large banks. Clegg said high-risk “casino” banking must be separated from low-risk high street banking.

Study: Texting contributes to students’ spelling development

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

Coventry, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Texting has been criticized for contributing to worsening spelling and grammar use among young people. However, a study by Coventry University dispelled that common belief.

The use of the short messaging function on cellphones instead contributes to students’ spelling development, the university’s researchers said.

The basis of that claim is a study on 114 children aged nine and 10 who were recruited from primary schools in the Midlands. The kids, who were not mobile phone users, were divided into two groups.

One group was given mobile phones that the students could use during weekends and school holidays over 10 weeks. The other group had regular access to a cellphone.

Members of both groups were given reading, spelling and phonological awareness exams before and after the study. The students’ reading and spelling were also tracked weekly.

Students from both groups logged higher test results after 10 weeks of mobile phone use. The researchers attributed the difference to texting being highly phonetic in nature and the students’ alphabet awareness being enhanced when they decode the text messages they received.

Prof. Clare Wood, lead researcher, said the study indicated use by youth of mobile phones does not benefit nor harm their literary development, contrary to popular belief.

The study will be published in the February issue of the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning.

Cameron pushes for more public services reforms

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – British Prime Minister David Cameron pushed Monday for more public service reforms, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education and peace and order.

On top of the coalition government’s reform agenda is the abolition of primary care trusts and health authorities and the turn over of their powers and finances to general practitioners. Despite criticisms from several sectors over the devolution, 141 GP consortia had been formed in response to the reform and to take on their new responsibility.

The health consortia covers at least half of the country, or 28 million patients, as part of the pilot program. They will get 80 percent of the $150 billion (GBP 100 billion) budget of the National Health System.

Expectedly, the NHS opposed the loss of funds and powers, and warned the reforms would lead to worsening of healthcare delivery.

The reforms are part of the health and social care bill the Conservative-led government will publish on Wednesday.

Aside from healthcare, another controversial social reform being pushed by the government is the creation of free schools independent of local authority control. The free schools would be for 16- to 19-year-olds and be operated by charities and companies.

More active role in providing public services would be given to charities, companies and community groups. The details of the proposed reforms are included in a White Paper to be published by the coalition government later this year. It is also in line with keeping the Big Society concept, while putting in place austerity measures to cut Britain’s record budget deficit.

VAT rise in Britain may be used to hike prices of goods

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Retail industry experts warned Monday that the 2.5 percent increase in value added tax, which took effect Tuesday, will be exploited by merchants to hike the prices of their wares.

Experts estimate cost of goods and even services will go up by about 8 percent, or three times the VAT hike which increase the effective tax rate to 20 from 17.5 percent.

One expert said retailers would likely round up, rather than round down the VAT increase. He justified the move as necessary for retailers to stay profitable because of years of price deflation. Another accounting consultancy said 60 percent of retail managers plan to increase prices by at least 2.1 percent on top of the VAT hike.

Industry analysts forecast memberships in gyms, mobile phone subscription rates, food prices and product prices will go up between 5 to 8 percent, timed with the VAT hike.

As a result of the tax hikes, a British accounting firm estimates that couples with a combined income of $105,000 (GBP 70,000) would increase their yearly spending by $840 (GBP 560). For average families, their bills would rise by $600 (GBP 400) a year.

Labor Party leader Ed Miliband warned that the VAT increase, aimed to reduce the national budget deficit and raise $4.5 billion (GBP 3 billion) a year, would place 250,000 jobs at risk.

One likely casualty of the VAT and price hikes would be the pub industry which estimates 8,800 jobs would be lost as drinking establishments would close since many Britons would probably opt to buy alcoholic beverages from the supermarket and drink at home.

The Center for Retail Research projects that retail sales in Britain would dip by 3.1 percent or $3.3 billion (GBP 2.2 billion) for the first quarter of 2011 because of the VAT increase.

Chancellor George Osborne defended the VAT hike as a necessity to reduce Britain’s debt or the coalition government would be forced to increase spending cuts by $19.5 billion (GBP 13 billion).

Report: 1.5 million Britons collected welfare, refused work in past 10 years

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – A report released Thursday by the Department for Work and Pensions found that about 1.5 million Britons abused the country’s welfare system the past decade by claiming welfare payments, but refusing work.

According to the report, about 750,000 of them were given sanctions and had their benefits cuts because they refused to follow regulations that would help them get jobs. Another 177,000 got Jobseeker’s Allowance and turned down offers, 444,000 more quit their work voluntarily and filed for Jobseeker’s Allowance and 123,000 were sanctioned because they claimed allowance after they were fired because of misconduct.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said because of these abuses of Britain’s welfare system, the coalition government will impose tougher rules. Among the regulations the government is considering is to introduce fixed-term cuts in benefits beginning at three months and going up to three years for Britons who repeatedly refuse to obey regulations.

Another investigation the DWP initiated is on Britons receiving welfare, but who have moved overseas to warmer countries such as Spain and Thailand, or other western nations such as the U.S. and Sweden.

The department is also running after relatives who claim benefits of dead welfare recipients, those who have unreported assets such as property, savings or even yachts and those with exaggerated disability.

Minister for Welfare Reform Lord Freud estimated the cost to taxpayers for welfare payments to Britons living overseas at $99 million (GBP 66 million) in 2009.

Report: British High Street Shops’ Asian Workers in Sweatshop Conditions

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – A report by two anti-poverty campaign groups released Sunday charged British High Street shops of exploiting their Asian workers by making the employees labor in sweatshop conditions. The groups named the retailers and brands as Marks & Spencer, Next, Monsoon, Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge.

Aside from poor working conditions of Indian workers, the groups War on Want and Labor Behind the Label, said the retailers pay poverty salaries and go against labor laws to pare costs to a minimum.

According to the campaigners, some workers get less than $90 (GBP 60) monthly salary and work until 2 a.m. to meet orders for clothes shipped to Britain. Some employees work 140 extra hours a month, but receive only half the mandated overtime rate.

It is the second time that Marks & Spencer has been accused of sweatshop allegations. Marks & Spencer recently released its danced-themed TV commercial with talent show judge Dannii Minogue, models Twiggy and Lisa Snowdon, singer W Brown, comedian Peter Kay and football commentator Jamie Redknapp endorsing the clothing brand.

The ad carries the slogan, “Don’t put a foot wrong this Christmas” and ends with the tagline “Quality worth every penny. The $90 paid by Marks & Spencer to Indian workers monthly is more than 50 percent below the living wage of $189 (GBP 126) in India.

Sam Maher, author of the report and campaigner at Labor Behind the Label, said in a statement, “Workers interviewed from these factories spoke of living in a climate of fear, where violence and systematic exclusion from rights was a daily reality. These conditions and their poverty wages are inexcusable. Brands sourcing from Gurgaon must take action to stop violence against unionized workers and make sure they pay prices that allow for a living wage.”

Monsoon declined to comment on the report. Debenhams and Marks and Spencer said they take seriously allegations of worker exploitation which goes against their companies strict ethical standards. The Arcadia Group which owns two major labels said it welcome the probe into poor labor standards involving their Asian factory workers.

Marks & Spencer reported a $948.75 million (GBP 632.5 million) pre-tax profit for the year ended in March 2010.
