United Way of Paducah-McCracken County supports 14 core Partner Agencies, but they also provide Community Needs Grants to many non-profits in Paducah and McCracken County that are not Partner Agencies. Any 501(c)3 agency providing health and human services can apply for this funding. All applications must fall within one of the United Way focus areas to be considered for funding. Deadlines for the 3 rounds of annual funding include, May 31st, August 31st and November 30th. The Community Needs Grant funds programs in our community who are seeking to do one of the following: *Develop a new program to meet an emerging need or a new need in our community. *Expand an already existing program. On December 16, the United Way of Paducah-McCracken County Community Needs Panel (formerly Emerging Needs Panel) reviewed grant applications for the third installment of funding for 2010. The Panel awarded funding to the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club, Purchase Area Sexual Assault and Child Advocacy Center and McCracken County Public Schools. Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club will receive $3,290 for Community Outreach. The committee felt this was a good opportunity for the Club to reach out to a population of children that have not previously had easy access to services provided. PASAC (Purchase Area Sexual Assault and Child Advocacy Center) was awarded $4,340.00 towards their Expanding Needs Grant for Advocacy and Support. The expansion will allow PASAC to work to re-start the Sexual Assault Response Team for Paducah-McCracken County, which is a team that focuses on adult cases of rape and sexual assault. Currently, this team is inactive. According to Mary Foley, Executive Director of PASAC, “The Community Needs Grant will allow PASAC to support a part-time Victims’ Advocate to serve victims of sexually-based crimes. This past year, the Advocacy Department has been double booked 30 times and triple booked 4 times. The need is vast, and this grant will help us expand and serve victims and their families in their greatest time of need. I am deeply grateful to the United Way for their help.” McCracken County Schools will receive $1,400.00 towards providing Children of Poverty in the Classroom-A Workshop for Teachers as well as $2,840 for Normal Development of the Young Adolescent: Understanding the Middle School Years. These workshops will provide groundwork for educating students in poverty. The Panel felt as though all funding awarded will greatly benefit our community. They are pleased to assist the recipients financially and strongly support their endeavors.
